Starting Your Own Backyard Garden: Vegetable Garden

Right after trying to determine your personal choice between a flower garden and vegetable garden you may have chosen to go for a more practical one – a small backyard vegetable garden. I said that it is more practical since doing such will save you money while you are enjoying the hobby. It is really worth the investment. The first thing that you have to consider in making a backyard vegetable garden is the availability of your garden space: do you have an available vacant lot in your area and how big is your area. Keep in mind that you can even make a backyard garden out of your cemented pathwalk as long as there is an available space.

It is said that in making a vegetable garden, it’s  good to start small. Starting from a small venture will allow you to focus on your work and it will allow you to become more attached at what you are doing without necessary exhausting oneself.  For those who don’t have much space at home, trying a container garden or even a pot garden can be a good idea to get started.  Or, a vertical garden is also suggested for individuals who are living near the walls.  Backyard gardening is all about passion and creativity. If you really love gardening, you can start out gardening no matter you may be.

So, if you have identified the size and the type of garden that you have you may now start looking for the appropriate type of plant that you will need to grow. If you are a container garden, then make sure that your  selected seeds will really fit into the type of garden that you choose.  The type of plants that are recommended for container or pot gardens are parsley, cabbages, cucumbers, green beans, leaf lettuce, spinach, cherry, patio tomatoes, eggplant, carrots, beets, radish and perhaps standard tomatoes. You have to make sure that the plants are not very crowded in their location. Trying to combine tall and short type of veggies could be a better idea to maximize space.

On the other hand, doing vertical garden does not need much skill in gardening as long as you are familiar of the plants that best suited for this type of gardening. Most common veggies that are planted with vertical gardening are tomatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, pole beans, grapes and small melons. Make sure that you know the type of vertical gardening that suits for each type of plant. Vines love to climb on trellis so they should be supported well.

I will be discussing on creating starting your backyard garden on the earth – not hanging or container but direct to the earth’s surface.
